Do You Hear The People Sing?

Food For Thought - Yellow Hibiscus

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

— Les Misérables

We live in troubling times, where the brave and noble are stifled merely for standing up for what they believe in. The world is in a state of acceptability where petulant tyranny is allowed to exist. Where good men get put away because they have greater ideologies, where bad men are allowed to run rampant. This is not about the evil that bad men do, but about the good that good men should do, despite the repercussions.

We like to think that we are alone in this life, that as long as we only look out for ourselves we will be fine. This life view could not be more wrong because no man is an island. We like to think that our actions will not affect others, but it inevitably does. Its fine if we are only applying this on a personal level, where our actions only affect us, but when we are put in positions of power that is no longer the case.

When we are given power, we should wield it responsibly. That transparency is important, that accountability and reliability are fundamental. We owe it to the people that put us there in the first place. Do not forget that when we are put in a position of power, you are meant to serve, and not abuse the powers given to us.

There comes a time in life where we have to make difficult choices, do we stand up and fight for what we believe in? Or do we sit idly by and watch evil and corruption seep into the veins of our existence. If you don’t feel that you should do it for yourself, think about this. What ideologies do you want your children to be raised on? What kind of world do you want them to be raised in? Be the change you want to see in the world. So sing, sing your heart out, sing to make sure your grievances are heard, sing because you know you’re doing the right thing.

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!
