Maria’s SteakCafe is one of the most trusted no fuss nor frills steakhouses for affordable and high-quality steaks, and now, they have released a special cut only available at all outlets. In addition to that, the steakhouse also boasts a new cocktail menu, created by the legendary Amanda Wan. We tasted everything on the menu to help you choose which cocktail will tickle your fancy.
Maria’s SteakCafe Sizzling Porterhouse Steak
To the uninitiated, a porterhouse steak is a large cut comprising of two smaller cuts, the beefier and fattier striploin and the succulent and tender tenderloin. How its prepared here is its grilled for that char you want, and finished on a hot plate in butter, adding the final flavours to the dish. This cut is available in all outlets, and is perfect for 2 over a couple of cocktails.
Cocktails by Amanda Wan at Maria’s SteakCafe
While Maria’s SteakCafe might have some of the tastiest and most affordable premium steaks in town, they have gone the extra mile by consulting the legendary Amanda Wan to create a selection of cocktails that both reflect Maria’s Ipoh heritage, while ensuring that each concoction is as delicious as the other. Each cocktail is a twist of known classics, all varying in strength and flavour.
St. Aperol Spritz
Aperol, elderflower, white wine, soda water, olive, sage
A simple twist on the classic Aperol Spritz, this version adds elderflower for that additional layer and olive and sage for a bit of herby umami.
Pompaloma
Reposado tequila, pomelo and grapefruit juices, agave syrup, lime juice, pomelo pulp
The Paloma twist is made using the Ipoh-famous local fruit, the pomelo, with another dimension of bitterness which worked unsurprisingly well.
Sesame Sour
Bourbon, roasted hazelnut toffee syrup, lemon juice, sesame oil, egg white, peanut brittle
The sesame sour is a twist on the Whiskey Sour, made with flavours of the Chinese peanut candy which is also from Ipoh. The sweetness was quite unique, with the sesame oil adding a deep umami tinge of flavour.
Maria’s Michelada
House Tangerine and Siciliana mix, Angostura aromatic bitters, hot sauce, lime juice, lager, pink salt rim
This take on the Mexican classic cocktail was both sweet, tangy and sour, with the beer adding a bitterness. Interesting and definitely one you should try.
Café Negroni
Aged rum, sweet vermouth, coffee and cherry liquor, Campari, orange twist, cocktail cherry
A decent take on the Coffee Negroni, the version here adds cherry liquor for that bittersweetness that marries well with coffee.
Violet Tonic
Gin infused with lavender and butterfly pea flowers, elderflower, pandan syrup, lime juice, tonic water, dried rosebuds
Simple and elgant, the lavender flavours cocktail makes a great starter aperitif before your dinner.
Oolong Fashioned
Bourdon infused with longan, oolong tea syrup, Angostura aromatic bitters, torched longan shell
Sweet, bitter and spirit forward, longan and oolong make a great pairing, which is why this was one of our favourite cocktails on the menu. A well-balanced drink.
Earl Grey Tea-Ni
Vodka infused with earl grey tea, milk-clarified earl grey tea, rose syrup, lemon juice, egg white, crushed rosebuds, orange slivers
The earl grey martini was clean on the palate, with the spices from the earl grey pronounced. This cocktail comes off as simple, but is much more complex than you would imagine, with its hints of floral from the rose and sourness from the milk-clarified earl grey tea.
Apple Treacle
Aged rum, rich brown sugar syrup, clear apple juice, angostura bitters, cinnamon sugar rim, torched apple
A very rich tasting cocktail, with extremes of sweet-sourness from the apple juice, with almost Christmas flavours form the cinnamon and brown sugar syrup. Perfect for a dessert cocktail.
Classic Espresso Martini
Vodka, double espresso, brown sugar syrup, coffee liqueur, coffee beans
The only cocktail that is not a twist on the menu, the classic espresso martini when made personally by Amanda Wan is the most perfect drink you can taste. This coffee forward cocktail is not one for the faint hearted.
