Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2025 - Awards Ceremony

Malaysia Has Once Again Been Overlooked

It has been a while since Malaysia has breached the top 50 positions, but not for a lack of having good restaurants, but probably with the lack of having the right destination. We can only hope that more voters within the region not overlook this beautiful country with its burgeoning dining scene. Dewakan  (No. 84) and Au Jardin in Penang (No. 100) are some of the beacons of hope and we really hope that more diners within Asia will pay us a visit.

It feels a little surreal, to be honest—making it onto the 50 Best 51–100 list for the first time is something we’re still taking in. More than anything, it’s a quiet but meaningful recognition of all the long hours, the teamwork, and the heart that goes into what we do every day. What makes it even more special is being able to represent Penang on this platform. This recognition isn’t just ours—it belongs to a community that’s been steadily building something together. From our friends at Gen who paved the way, to Backdoor Bodega who’ve made waves in their own lane, and everyone else behind the scenes pushing boundaries—we’ve all played a part in putting Penang back on the map. We hope this shines a little more light on what’s happening here in Malaysia, and gives the next wave of chefs, bartenders, and restaurateurs a reason to keep going. There’s so much talent in this country. This is just one small step, and we’re excited to see where it all leads.” — Kim Hock Su of Au Jardin in Penang.
