City breaks have officially been named the UK’s favourite type of holiday and almost half of all people surveyed took one in 2018. They’re so different to a longer holiday, as you never get bored and each day is packed to the brim with activities. If you stagger city breaks throughout the year, you’ll always have a holiday to look forward to and you’ll get to experience a lot of different cultures while you’re at it. Birmingham
This underrated UK city is a great option for people who dislike overcrowded tourist destinations, but still want a city break filled with adventure. Birmingham saw 3.3 million visitors between 2015-17 who flock to the city for its charm and culture. The bullring is a shopaholic’s heaven and you could easily spend a whole day browsing the many shops it has to offer. Birmingham prides itself on being a diverse city, which it reflects in its nightlife through comedy shows and artistic performances. When dinner time comes around, why not visit Birmingham’s famous curry mile? This street is home to some of the most delicious curry dishes in the country.
Amsterdam
If you want a culture-rich city break, then Amsterdam is the perfect place for you. Art lovers will be in their element as there are so many art museums to visit in the city, including the famous Van Gogh museum. For a more sobering experience, visit the Anne Frank museum which documents how the Jewish Frank family hid in an annex, in an attempt to evade capture during world war II. Best of all, Amsterdam is actually a budget friendly city to visit if you plan your trip well.
Dublin
The weather might not be on your side, but who needs sunshine when you have so many amazing pubs to drink at? Dublin is a gorgeous city, with so many exciting things to see and do. If you enjoy a tipple, you have to visit the Guinness Storehouse, which shows you exactly how the iconic drink is made – you’ll even get to enjoy your own pint at the end of the tour.
Venice
This city is breathtakingly beautiful and is guaranteed to amaze followers on your Instagram feed. Venice was literally built on water and the locals spend their days lazily drifting along the canals on gondolas. Basilica di San Marco is a popular tourist attraction and is considered to be an architectural masterpiece. One thing’s for sure, you won’t be forgetting about this stunning cathedral any time soon.
Paris
Also known as the city of love, Paris should be on every couple’s travel list, as it truly is a romantic destination. Nothing screams romance more than sharing a bottle of vintage red wine over a platter of quality cheese and soft bread. Even if you’re not coupled up, Paris is still a great city break for you and your best friends as you invest in some chic clothing and embark on an arty adventure at the Louvre.
