Can you tell us a bit about Cookhouse?
COOKHOUSE is a community-driven shared cloud kitchen with private kitchen studios, co-working space as well as cooking events arena built for people in the food business. The idea of COOKHOUSE came about from my own experience setting up 2 central kitchens for my F&B business and through observations of the growth of co-working office industry. It dawned on me that there was a real cost-saving and advantage to food entrepreneurs if there was an option to lease and rent kitchen space as well as equipment instead of having to purchase them upfront.
The concept of commissary kitchens and shared kitchens is not necessarily a new one, it existed and had been running for more than a decade in Europe and the US. I felt that renewing the concept by injecting it with new technology and addressing more current needs would make it appealing. Our modern Malaysian society had well embraced and accepted the benefits of a shared economy through experiences with the likes of Airbnb, GRAB e-hailing as well as co-working spaces. Hence, I felt the timing was ripe for Cookhouse in Malaysia.
Who can benefit from this space?
Cookhouse is able to cater to a wide range of businesses, from new startups to established F&B brands. Startups and small businesses benefit from the lower startup cost and being part of a larger community, which offers benefits in bulk-purchasing advantages and perks being part of the Cookhouse community. Working in a motivated environment together with other food entrepreneurs also boost inspiration and shorten learning curves. For more established F&B players, Cookhouse’s cloud kitchens enable lower entry cost and a more efficient way of reaching delivery markets.
How much are the packages?
Our packages start as low as RM900 per pax per month inclusive of all utilities with 24 hours access for the shared package. A private kitchen studio starts at RM3000 per month.
Can you tell us about some of the equipment that you have?
We have commercial-grade kitchens fitted out with baking production equipment such as deck ovens, mixers, dough proofer and sheeter, and Asian and western cooking line types of equipment as well such as the charbroiler, salamander, griddle, high-speed steamer, wok, vegetable preparation machines etc.
Can you tell us about the event space?
We have a 16-counter Masterchef styled set up in the cooking events arena equipped with a stage, LED screen, live camera and special effects lighting. We have a maximum capacity of 32 pax if it is based on 2 participants per counter. We have inhouse hosted events for corporate team building, kids and family parties as well.
Tell us a bit about your other projects.
I started out in business in the construction industry before getting involved in F&B and events industry. My journey into F&B started with Hanbing Korean Dessert Café 5 years ago and the business grew to include Korean BBQ brands like Shinmapo Korean BBQ, Apple Samgyupsal as well as Seoulnami Korean BBQ. We have a total of 8 Korean outlets now. With my background in construction, I took on the renovation and fit-out of all our outlets including the set up of 2 central kitchens later on to support our growth. At Cookhouse, I was able to combine the experience gained from setting up, building, growing and operating my own F&B businesses and events venue Glasshouse at Seputeh. The cooking events arena feature in Cookhouse was incorporated to give a boost to experiential activities and events.
